Course # SPE-0303: June 17-18 2003
Stream Stability Assessment & Monitoring
Prerequisite: Stream Classification
- Procedures & Applications
This workshop is designed to train individuals in field data
collection methods and analysis techniques for:
§ The
variables that influence stream conditions
§ Determining
stream channel stability, bank erosion prediction, and measurement
§ Sediment
relations
§ Potential
versus existing stream conditions
§ Influence of
riparian vegetation on channel stability
§ Integration
of ecosystem concepts into field applications
The monitoring of vertical and horizontal and vertical stability, channel
materials, sediment transport and hydraulics will be presented. The course
includes hands-on techniques for field measurements, data analysis and
interpretations and the use of replicate studies for verification and time trend
analysis. Design and application of monitoring objectives and methods for
channel stability and the collection and analysis of suspended and bedload
sediment will also be covered. The course provides an integrated approach that
introduces the fundamental principles of hydrology, hydraulics and fluvial
geomorphology and describes the linkages among these sciences as they relate to
river morphology. This course is a prerequisite to the Design Techniques Course
